MENOMINEE, Mich. (WLUC) – The 2019 Menominee Waterfront Festival kicked off Thursday evening.
This annual celebration has been happening for the past 37 years.
The first day of the festival opened with the popular Children’s Parade, which isn’t the only thing the kids are excited about.
“We are going to go to the bouncy houses and probably get some food, I want to eat an elephant ear,” said Reegan Hubbard, one of the children walking in the parade.
Some kids were decked out in fun costumes and even decorated their bikes for annual parade.
There is fun for the whole family with a live band and a variety of food vendors.
“Our food booths, I think we are pretty unique, we only allow nonprofit organizations in our community to run food booths and all the money stays in the community, helping good causes,” said Nancy Douglas, Waterfront Festival Director.
The festival goes through Sunday and organizers say this would not be possible without their business sponsors and the 200 volunteers.
“Really it’s the community, all the volunteers that for a year, the planning and the preparation it’s just exciting to see everybody working together as a team and so many of the businesses and citizens coming together for a festival,” said Tony Graff, Menominee City Manager.
The event is special for many of the residents.
“I think when I see neighbors greeting neighbors and families reuniting, I mean there are families who actually come home and have family reunions at this time, a lot of our high school graduation people schedule their reunions at this time, and really for me it’s the celebration of community,” said Douglas.
There will be a variety of other events happening throughout the weekend including the Firefighters Waterball Contest on Friday, 5k and 10k runs on Saturday and a parade on Sunday.
