Thousands of people have been evacuated from a hip hop festival after a fire engulfed a nearby forest, according to witnesses.

Revellers filmed plumes of smoke rising from the blaze close to the Fresh Island festival at Zrće beach, on the island of Pag, in Croatia.

In one clip, a reveller can be heard saying ‘oh my God, it’s chaos’ as people flee the flames.

Papaya nightclub, one of the three venues involved in the festival, has been evacuated.

In a video of the evacuation, an announcer can be heard telling the crowd: “Leave the club slowly, no need to panic, everything is under control, alright? We will keep you posted.”

Jess Storey, who was at Papaya nightclub with her friends, told Mirror Online: “The flames were at times double the height of the trees and the smoke cloud grew very quickly also.”

“We spotted it as we filmed videos from the raised VIP section of the club and noticed that it was spreading rapidly across the forest over the bay due to the high winds.

“We made the decision to leave immediately – many people had noticed the fire but were filming it and not taking action so we decided to get out before there was a mass stampede.

“The people on the lower level did not seem to have noticed the flames.”

Festivalgoers were evacuated from Papaya nightclub during the Fresh Island festival

Festivalgoer Kristijan Rovan, from Slovenia, told Mirror Online she had been evacuated from Papaya nightclub, where US rapper Tyga was expected to play later this morning.

She said: “The fire is taking place in a forest near the beach and so far it’s only the forest that’s on fire.

“The problem for the firefighters is that it is very windy, so the fire is spreading quickly.”

Ms Rovan said at least one of the other venues at the festival had been evacuated.

The reveller added that thousands of Brits were attending Fresh Island.

The annual party, started in 2012, has become the biggest hip hop beach festival in Europe, drawing in the genre’s biggest acts.
