STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Community members celebrated their culture, creativity and families at the 1st Annual October Festival in Stapleton on Saturday.
Dozens of attendees enjoyed the outdoor festivities at Central Life Family Center — the first themed-celebration in October for the North Shore community.
“We always wanted to do an October-themed carnival in this area because sometimes its overlooked,” said Antoinette Donegan, the community coordinator for Central Life. “It took us a couple years to put it together, but we’re really happy to have this event for families to enjoy.”
Between noon and 8 p.m., the festival featured local vendors from Stapleton and Park Hill selling cultural clothing, handmade jewelry, authentic cuisine and African artwork.
For the kids, children-friendly activities included carnival games, face-painting, sweet treats and multiple inflatable rides.
“The main purpose is for the community to come together and children can play in a safe space,” added Donegan. “
The organizer says although this is the first October festival in Stapleton, she doesn’t plan on it being the last.
“We want to keep doing this every year so local friends, families and vendors can all join in on a neighborhood celebration,” said Donegan.
