This year’s Queen Azalea is the actress Briana Venskus, the first festival queen to openly identify as a member of the LGBTQ community at the time of her selection.
A former Wilmingtonian will serve as queen of the 2019 N.C. Azalea Festival.
Briana Venskus, an actress, grew up in Wilmington and attended The University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Venskus identifies as bisexual, and she is the first Azalea Queen to openly identify as a member of the LGBTQ community at the time of her selection.She is the 72nd Azalea Festival queen.
Her credits include Agent Piperon on ABC’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” and Agent Vasquez in the CW series “Supergirl.” She also appeared in 2014 comedy “Let’s Be Cops,” Netflix original series “Grace and Frankie” and, from 2016 to 2018, AMC’s “The Walking Dead.”
As Azalea Festival queen, Venskus will ride in the parade and attend most festival events.
