Dehradun: Following an encouraging response to the Nayar Valley Adventure Sports Festival held in Pauri Garhwal this month, Nainital is also planning a similar event, to be held from December 26 to 30 as part of the Winter Carnival. The five-day festival is planned to be held at five locations – Nainital, Bhimtal, Kotabagh, Sattal and Pangot.
According to officials, cross country paragliding competition to be organised in Kotabagh area will be the biggest event at the carnival, which is expected to haul in a large number of tourists, especially to unconventional spots.
Talking to TOI, Nainital district magistrate Savin Bansal said, “People mostly know Nainital town and Corbett, a few visit Mukteshwar. The aim of this festival is to have people explore untouched areas of Nainital, which have a lot of potential to attract tourists.”
“Activities like hot-air ballooning, paramotoring, mountain trail biking (MTB), heritage walk and village tours, trail running, trekking, zip lining, rock climbing, rappelling are slated to be organised during the festival,” said the district tourism development officer (DTDO) Nainital, Arvind Kumar.
“In Bhimtal, we’ll organise kayaking, wall painting & boat races. In Nainital, events like astrophotography, boat decoration and a half marathon will be organized. In Pangot and Saattal, bird watching workshops will take place in the five-day-long event,” he added.
The registration for events like mountain biking and paragliding will start soon while the rest of the events will be free for the tourists who will be in the lake town to celebrate New Year. If all goes as per the plan, this will be the second biggest adventure sports event organized in Uttarakhand during the pandemic.
