Airdrie Festival of Lights will look a little bit different this year.

The lights are twinkling for their 25th year, with the help of the Festival of Lights team, local volunteers and their sponsors. While the festival is a steadfast Airdrie holiday tradition, you’ll notice a few things missing. Thanks to the COVID-19 restrictions in place, you’ll see new directional arrows to keep visitors headed in one direction. You’ll also not see the trains, hot chocolate stand or Santa’s workshop. But that hasn’t stopped them from putting up the lights and making sure we have something fun and safe to check out this month. “We’ve put in about 15 hundred hours as an organization already just to get the lights set up and running and other things in place. but at the end of the day, we are lights. I mean, we are the Airdrie Festival of Lights and lights are what we do best and that’s what we are going to do this year.” says Michelle Pirzek, Airdrie Festival of Lights Society coordinator.

They are limiting groups to the regulations of 10, though they’d like to try and make those groups all members of the same family and ask that people will consider wearing a mask, and if not members of the same household, to keep that 2 meters of distance and follow all directions.

Their donation booths will be on-site to make a monetary donation, you’ll also be able to make your donations online this year through their website. About eighty percent of the sponsors from previous years are on board to keep the tradition and festival going for this year, regardless of what they’re going to look like.

Another way to participate this year is with their Get Lit Campaign. Houses can register in Airdrie to get on their map, that way families can extend their light tour and drive to some of the neighbourhoods to see some of the incredible displays. “We’re not asking for biggest, brightest or best lights. We are asking that we connect our communities one bulb at a time,” says Pirzek. The map is live now and you can get more details here.
