It has been a fairly recent tradition for a brand new president to sign a series of executive orders in the Oval Office after their swearing in. This is done primarily for two reasons.
One, it shows a President and an Administration hitting the ground running to fulfill promises made during the campaign. And two, it clearly demonstrates what will be the Administration’s top legislative priorities for it’s first 100 days.
There is also a “First Hundred Days” tradition that began during the first term of President Franklin Roosevelt. The nation was in the grip of the Great Depression and Roosevelt believed big government, “New Deal” socialism programs would help the economy recover faster.
Of course the government’s “shovel ready jobs” – to coin a phrase from former President Barack Obama – didn’t work. The United States’ entry into World War II is what ultimately brought the country out of the Great Depression but the “First Hundred Days” tradition has remained ever since.
President Joe Biden has decided to keep the “Executive Orders” and the “First Hundred Days” traditions for his Administration. The “First Hundred Days” tradition is innocuous and is just symbolism over substance, something the Democrats have mastered. The Executive Orders tradition is a little more precarious, especially for a Democratic Republic such as ours.
The President has promised to vaccinate 100 million people in 100 days against the Coronavirus. Sounds ambitious, doesn’t it? Well actually it’s not. According to Jim Blumenstock of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, we are already very close to that goal, “We have already seen a couple of days where we’ve hit a million mark. And I guess, on average, we’re somewhere between 700-, 800,000 per day.”
The hypocrite Commander in Chief is also asking Americans to “mask up” during his first 100 days in office. The President is “asking” us to wear masks but he’s mandating their use with an executive order. The order applies to all federal property and where the federal government has jurisdiction such as on trains and airplanes.
Many also believe this order applies to people driving and riding in their private automobiles on the interstate highway system that the Federal government maintains – at taxpayer’s expense.
As I mentioned above, Liberal Democrats have mastered empty calorie symbolism and President Biden and his family took little time after his swearing in to prove this. While celebrating at the Lincoln Memorial, President Biden and his family were photographed….maskless! This was Press Secretary Jen Psaki’s lame excuse after a reporter called her out on it:
“He was celebrating an evening of a historic day in our country. And certainly he signed the mask mandate because it’s a way to send a message to the American public about the importance of wearing masks, how it can save tens of thousands of lives. We take a number of COVID precautions, as you know here, in terms of testing, social distancing, mask wearing ourselves, as we do every single day. But I don’t know that I have more for you on it than that.”
Psaki was later asked if this sends a bad example:
“I think the power of his example is also the message he sends by signing 25 executive orders, including almost half of them related to COVID; the requirements that we’re all under every single day here to ensure we’re sending that message to the public. Yesterday was a historic moment in our history. … I think we have big — bigger issues to worry about at this moment in time.”
And this is why I wrote earlier that executive orders are precarious in a Democratic Republic because they unconstitutionally usurp power from the legislative branch. The President is supposed to sign bills into law, not make and sign the laws too.
President Biden did just that on his first day in office when he signed seventeen executive orders that reversed many of former President Trump’s initiatives. The most egregious in my opinion are the five executive orders Biden signed that dealt with illegal immigration.
- Protection for DACA recipients or so called “Dreamers.”
- Reversal of President Trump’s so called “Muslim country” ban.
- Reverses the expansion of illegal immigration emforcement.
- Halts construction of the border wall.
- Require non citizens be included in the census count.
The fact that almost a third of President Biden’s inauguration day executive orders deal with illegal immigration shows us their real priorities. The Democrats have threatened to eliminate the filibuster, pack the Supreme Court, add two more states to the union – and four more senators to their side of the aisle – for a permanent governing majority. What better way to cement a permanent governing majority by potentially adding 11 million new Democrat voters in eight years or less?
