The Cheraw School Board had a reason to be proud of their music department as teacher Jessica Bay requested permission on Monday night to take George Cardenas and Nathan Clark to the Festival of Winds Honor Band in Pueblo Feb. 13-16. Both students play trumpet. Bay will transport them and their expenses will be covered.
Cardenas was also chosen for the Western Slope Honor Choir in Gunnison March 5-7. Bay will take him there and expenses will be covered by the Cheraw School District for that occasion, also.
A Pre School Learning Table from HATCH Early Learning was approved for the preschool, Holly Pacheco, teacher. Pacheco is excited about the table, which is computerized. The child picks his picture out on the screen to start playing. Various games may be chosen, but they all teach a basic learning skill required by the state standards. The real beauty of the system is that it makes a record of each child’s work, so that by looking at the records in the machine, one may know when the various skills are mastered – such as one-to-one correspondence, numbers, letters, sounds.
In the BEST Grant update, Dr. Matthew Snyder reported the asbestos sampling has been completed. The asbestos was found to be in the glue holding down the tiles which are covered by the carpet. It will be removed during spring break or at other times when the academic environment will not be disturbed – mostly after school is out. There is also some asbestos in the walls. The new Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning should be ordered by the beginning of March.
The final budget for 2019-2020 was approved and the appropriation resolution passed.
The Triad Computer Services proposal was tabled with no vote at this time. Policy updates were all approved on second reading.
The next regular meeting of the school board is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 24.
