Winterset’s Covered Bridge Festival will celebrate 50 years this weekend.
The 2019 theme for the two-day event is “Through The Lens,” with a look back at five decades of festival fun dating to 1970.
A ribbon-cutting and rededication ceremony for Cedar Bridge will be held on Saturday at 5 p.m. The bridge, which is among those noted in Robert James Waller’s best-selling 1992 novel “The Bridges of Madison County,” was destroyed by arsonists in 2017. The ceremony will take place at Cedar Bridge Park.
Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Madison County native, will serve as Grand Marshal for the 2 p.m. parade on Sunday.
Some of the other festival events on Saturday and Sunday in Winterset include:
- A photography contest featuring the work of local photo photographers. The contest’s winners will have their work displayed all weekend at the American Legion Hall in Winterset.
- There will be a free showing of a documentary dedicated to the festival’s history at the Iowa Theater. The film will feature interviews with some of the festival’s early organizers, old photos, and stories from the past.
- A memorabilia exhibit will be on display at the Madison County Historical Museum that looks back at the festival’s 50-year history.
- A photographic war memorial will honor 115 Iowans in the military who were killed during the War on Terror in a war zone. The memorial will feature military and personal photos of each person and be displayed at the American Legion Hall all weekend.
- Winterset’s Apple Tree Players performed “Oklahoma!” during the first Covered Bridge Festival weekend in 1970. The Winterset Stage will be performing a medley of songs from the acclaimed musical.
