Debbie Dingell Sounds Alarm Bells to Democrats on What She’s Hearing From Michigan Voters About Trump

Looking at the polling coming out of Michigan on the presidential race, one might think that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has a lock on the state.

With just a few days to go before election day, Biden’s polling lead average stands at 8.2. With just one exception, all polls taken over the last month show Biden’s lead there is between 7 and 11 points.

But because pollsters so badly botched the 2016 race between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the general level of trust that many once had in their numbers in the past is just not there anymore for a lot of people, and Democratic Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI-12) is one of them.

Dingell appeared on CNN’s “New Day” program this morning to talk about the state of the presidential race in her home state, and in what no doubt sent some CNN anchors and reporters to the fainting couches, Dingell said the race was “tightening” there. She also talked about how she had talked to a number of auto workers who she was surprised to hear say they were done supporting Democrats and would instead be voting for Trump:

Dingell said she’s been talking with auto workers who she said she thought would be voting for Biden, but they made it clear to her that they were voting for Trump.

While she said she wants to “make it clear the Biden campaign is listening,” she thinks “in these last days, people are focused on turning out the Detroit, Flint votes, which matter greatly and may not quite be at the numbers people would like to see.”

But “we can’t forget that auto worker, the steelworker, the teamster whose jobs they’ve lost and are worried about and want to know, as Democrats, we care,” Dingell said.

She also made it clear that she does not believe what polls are saying about the state, and said that Democrats have got to “push back” against what she’s hearing down the homestretch:

“I don’t believe any of the polls, I don’t think anybody is up tremendously. I think it’s competitive. I think Joe Biden is up right now; I think President Trump is going to make a hard push here, and we’ve got to push back, and we’ve got to push back on Covid, too,” Dingell said.

Watch:

Dingell’s comments aren’t far off of what some other high-profile Democrats are saying, including senior campaign officials for Joe Biden who have recently gone on record to say they know the numbers in various battleground states are a lot closer than they appear in the polling.

Obviously, the Trump campaign is seeing some internals about Michigan voters that aren’t being reflected in the numerous polls that have been taken in the state over the last several months. Trump has made campaign visits to the state recently and will be doing so again before election day.

Wouldn’t it be something if Trump was able to make it two in a row in Michigan? Watching the meltdowns in the media alone would make all the extra effort they are putting into winning the state worth it.
