EAST SMETHPORT — The McKean County Fair Association ushers in the Christmas season with the Drive-Thru 2020 Festival of Lights from 5-9 p.m. Friday at the fairgrounds in East Smethport and continuing through Dec. 23 with some bonus days.
While the fair association has sponsored Christmas-themed drive-thru displays in recent years, this is the first Festival of Lights featuring thousands and thousands of lights on displays created and built by our community members, businesses and schools.
“This certainly has been a team effort,” said Christy Graham, project chairman and fair director. “Since we began on Oct. 11, our volunteers have spent an enormous number of manhours working week nights and weekends to get ready.”
As attendees drive around the course, they will see more than 40 displays in addition to inflatables. Among the displays are the Grinch and a sleigh, toy shop, nativity scene, wreaths/flowers, gingerbread house, railroad engine, and antique farm equipment from the Good Growing Gardens facility that were decorated by employees of C.L. McKeirnan.
Graham described the Festival of Lights as “a COVID-friendly event that people can view from the comfort of their cars while practicing social distancing.”
Christmas music will be played throughout the event.
On Fridays from Nov. 27 through Dec. 18, the hours are 5-9 p.m.; on Saturdays from Nov. 28 through Dec. 19, the hours are 5-9 p.m.; on Sundays from Nov. 29 through Dec. 20, the hours are 5-8 p.m.
The hours will be 5-8 p.m. on the following bonus days: Dec. 17 and Dec. 21-23.
The cost is $10 per car and $25 per bus. The last car allowed to enter will be 15 minutes prior to the closing. Visitors will be asked to cast their votes for the best display at the end of the course.
Sponsors have helped defray operating costs. A list of the sponsors will be found throughout the course.
