The annual food truck festival kicked off Seton Hall’s monthlong multicultural celebration.

Pirates stepped out of their air-conditioned rooms and into the heat on campus earlier this month to lineup for Seton Hall’s popular International Food Truck Festival. The daylong event was sponsored by the Office of International Programs, the Multicultural Advisory Committee, and the Student Government Association.

Chimney cakes were grilled over hot charcoal, just as they are in Hungary.

As hungry students waited patiently to be served, the exotic scents of flavorful dishes from around the world filled the air. There were mouth-watering chimney cakes from Hungary, melt-in-your mouth pork buns, and pad thai from Asia and saucy sautéed veggies from Ethiopia. “I was very pleased that so many people were able to try Hungarian chimney cakes for the first time at the festival!” said Maria Bouzas, director of OIP. Noting the authenticity of the food at the festival, she added: “The owner of Kurly Kurtosh told me that you can find these traditional cakes made over charcoal grills in the streets of Hungary.”

Celebrating street culture was the theme of this year’s festival. A much loved Seton Hall tradition, students sampled international fare served from five food trucks parked around the Green. The turnout was big at Ann’s Catering; the Caribbean food truck was the first to run out of tickets. In addition to trying out the tropical flavors of jerk chicken and tasty empanadas, students took part in multicultural activities including Asian calligraphy and plastic paint can drumming. The festival also featured dance performances from the African Student Association dance team SABA, the Black Student Union dance team Black Illusion, as well as other campus groups.

The Food Truck Festival marks the beginning of Seton Hall’s annual International Month during October. The celebration promotes diversity and cultural awareness, and showcases different activities from departments, centers, institutes and student organizations around campus. Students are given the opportunity to showcase their heritage and to experiences other cultures as well. Events are running through November at locations around campus.
