Minnesota Fringe announced it is administering a new Theater Emergency Relief Fund to assist theater artists whose work has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Individual grants of $1,200 will be given out. The awards will be based on need, Fringe Executive Director Dawn Bentley said in a news release.

The fund was initiated by an anonymous donor, with enough for 55 grants. Additional donations are being accepted and can be made at the Fringe website. “People are quite supportive and the fund is growing,” Bentley said. As of Monday, additional donations were received for 15 more grants.

The fund will be open to all individuals in Minnesota who work in theater or dance production or design, whether full or part time, regular staff or contract workers. The awards will be given out until the fund is depleted, Bentley said.

All applications will be reviewed by an independent panel of theater and dance professionals. Priority will be given to those with critical needs as described in the application. A minimum of 10 percent of awards will go to members of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color) populations, LGBTQIA+ community members, disability community members, and/or those who live outside the 11-county, Twin Cities metro, according to the news release.

Applications open Dec. 31 and close Jan. 15. The application is available on the Fringe website, Grants are expected to be processed and awarded before the end of January.
