Government school kids take part in lake festival

Around 200 students from two government schools participated in the Makkala Kere Habba, a celebration of that brought together kids from schools for fun and , to encourage community participation and create awareness on history and issues of a lake.

A programme was held by Namma Bengaluru Foundation at Jogi Lake in Hemmigepura ward limits in Raja Rajeswari Nagar assembly segment on Friday. This is said to be the first of lake festivals scheduled to be held throughout the year, covering 10 lakes in and around the city.

“It was a good experience for our students. They participated in easy writing and drawing competitions. I took 100 students from our school and 12 of them won prizes,’’ said M Nagarathnamma, Head-mistress of Government Model School, Talaghatta-pura.

Harish Kumar, General Manager, Namma Benga-luru Foundation said that the city’s lakes are barely surviving with garbage being dumped and toxic chemicals being let in. “We need more children who are the future custodians who are ready to put in efforts and safeguard lakes across Bengaluru,” he said.
