Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, review: endlessly inventive

At Huddersfield’s invigorating annual festival, you can meditate to the buzz of drones in “sound installations”, have your ears bent by turntable artists, and your brain teased by puzzling conjunctions of images and sound, some with a political edge. This might all sound forbiddingly serious, but there were also touches of humour during the festival’s final weekend, in a concert from Ensemble Contrechamps, a group of improvising musicians. Or rather there were aspirations to humour but, as any comedian knows, making people laugh is all about timing, and here things moved with a fatal clunkiness.
