On Wednesday, former Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz made a real splash on The View.
But Whoopi Goldberg didn’t appreciate the dousing, so she tossed him out of the pool.
Co-host Joy Behar put it to him: “You still don’t think any of this is impeachable. But the only people who actually agree with you are on your defense team. And 75% of Americans want to hear from Bolton. So why should we listen to you?”
Alan kept it simple:
“Well, I made the Constitutional arguments.”
And he’s not playing favorites:
“I would have been making exactly the same argument if Hillary Clinton had been elected president and if she had been impeached for abuse of power, obstruction of Congress. In fact, I started doing my research on impeachment and decided to write a book when Hillary Clinton was in the lead and it looked like she would be elected and the Republicans were yelling, ‘Lock her up’ and ‘Impeach her.’”
He’s got some substantial back-up for that comment — he showed the girls the book’s original cover, featuring the title The Case Against Impeaching Clinton.
Regardless, so far as Joy’s concerned, Dershowitz is the lone weirdo:
“I was going ask you, say, according to what I’m reading you’re the only Constitutional scholar who goes with that line. There is not one other that agrees with you, not one.”
Whoopi was gettin’ ready to pounce…
Alan: “Let me be very clear about that. In 1867 the Dean of the Columbia law school –”
Take it, Whoop:
“Wait, Alan. In 1492, you know, (singing) Columbus sailed the seas of blue. But I need to move on.”
Cut off!
Alan fought back:
“No, no, no, you’re not going to get me to move on until I make this point –”
She told him to “move faster.”
“I have to make this point,” he insisted.
Goldberg grounded him. Or tried.
But Dershowitz dug in:
“Shortly after the Constitution was enacted, the Dean of the Columbia Law School said that the weight of authority was in favor of it being a crime. Now the academics all say it isn’t. Why? Because Donald Trump is being impeached. If Hillary Clinton were being impeached, they’d all be on my side.”
Joy made a sandwich:
“That’s just baloney. That’s just baloney.”
Whoopi wanted clarity — does it have to be a crime for the President to get the boot?
“Are you done? Okay. You’re saying you need a crime or criminal-like behavior –“
Alan said it ain’t him:
“Not me. That’s what the framers said, of the Constitution.”
Here it goes. Whoopi squinted her separated-by-suncscreen eyes and blew out her whistle. You — outta the pool!
“So I’m moving you on, or I’m cutting you off.”
Then how can he make his point?
Time was of the essence; but why couldn’t he make his timely point?
“One or the other is going to happen. I don’t want to make this contentious, but we only have several minutes. You’re laughing. I’ve always been respectful to you and you’ve always been respectful to me.”
Alan agreed, at least with that last part:
“I am, I’m very respectful to you.”
I have seemed to notice in the past: A fella (or female) can get cut off on The View if he’s making a point not highly welcomed.
Alan oughta know the Constitution; and the law. His opinion isn’t the last word, but maybe it’s worth hearing. About the constitutional reality of the charges being leveled against the President.
But “level” isn’t a political field anyone’s likely to be playing on, on Democrat-tilted television.
