***** Spoilers for “Game of Thrones” Season 8, episode 3 below.*****
Every Wednesday morning, SFGATE finds the biggest headlines in local (and sometimes national) beer. Check back here weekly for news, events, and information about special releases from your favorite local breweries.
SFGATE has a biweekly beer newsletter! Called The Mash, it contains key local stories about your favorite beer and breweries, as well as other, more nationally-spanning industry news. To sign up, head here.
Those of you drinkers who prefer to do a bit of running to offset your beer should jog on up to Sebastopol this May 4 for the annual IPA 10K, a 6.2-mile run — with “chug zone” stops — followed by a “post-race brew fest” at the Barlow outdoor market. Finishers are handed a frankly very useful prize: “a special finisher’s medal that doubles as a bottle-opener.” Each entry gets runners into the beer fest, where 20 breweries, including nearby Crooked Goat, Seismic, Del Cielo and Speakeasy will be pouring their beer until 2 p.m. Entry passes are on sale now.
Over at Spirits Alley in Alameda, Faction Brewing is readying its yard for the annual Brewbies festival, an annual beer fest benefiting the Keep A Breast Foundation. This year’s lineup includes Fieldwork, Bottle Logic, Central Coast, Cellarmaker, Sante Adairius, Beachwood and more. The event kicks off on Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m., and tickets are on sale now at Brewbies’ website.
Speaking of Faction, the well-respected crafter of local pilsners is at last getting into the can game. As the brewery noted on Facebook, it was their first canning run (though they previously sold bottles), and they packaged up “4-packs of 16 oz. cans of Penske File Pale, Faction Pils, Spring IPA, and A-Town Pale.” Expect to start seeing all of those (other than the A-Town) available at bottle shops in the area.
Also looking at some new packaging for one of their brews: Russian River Brewing Company. Hold up though — it’s really not what you think; it’s a bit of departure from canon. RRBC has begun bottling a hazy IPA — a hazy IPA! — called Mind Circus:
Cellarmaker, meanwhile, is peak Cellarmaker this week, as they release their annual Tired Hands collab, the Taco Hands IPA. The beer, brewed every year around Cinco de Mayo, is made with select taco ingredients — lime, tortilla, spices, for example — and this year, the brewery has released it on April 30, a few days ahead of the annual holiday.
Winter may finally be over in Westeros, but one of its great lords, Randyll Tarly, has risen from the grave with a special message for Fogbelt Brewing Company. Okay, sort of. In honor of the brewery’s “Game of Thrones” trivia recently, Fogbelt commissioned the actor who plays Tarly, James Faulkner, to wish participants a good luck (and also, apparently, to express his hope that his son Samwell avenge his death). Valar morghulis? Watch the video here.
