Jack Johnson, Phil Lesh & Friends and Stick Figure will headline the 2020 Levitate Music and Arts Festival this July at the Marshfield Fairgrounds.
Organizers announced the lineup for the eighth annual event on Tuesday, Feb. 4. The festival expanded to three days last year, hosting 40,000 music-lovers at the Marshfield Fairgrounds – this year’s event will take place from July 10-12.
The annual event, which began in 2013 and expanded to two days in 2016, brings together national and international musicians to Marshfield for the event, which also features many artisan and craft vendors and local food trucks.
Despite persistent rumors that the festival would be moving out of Marshfield to Gillette Stadium, owner Dan Hassett made it clear in December that was “absolutely not” the case.
“We’ve really increased our confidence that we think we can keep it at the Fairgrounds forever,” he said. “When we started, people thought it might not work for a larger music festival,” Hassett said. “We found that people really enjoyed it because it was unique and because it was different. It’s an old fairground and it has a funky layout.”
Hassett credited the Fairgrounds with working hard to maintain the distinct feel and history of the venue, which has influenced festival organizers’ direction.
“There aren’t a lot of fairgrounds anywhere in the nation that have been around for 150 years,” Hassett said. “With that, there’s a lot of character that we’re able to have be part of the festival.”
None of this would be present in a modern venue like Gillette.
“It wouldn’t be appropriate for Levitate,” Hassett said. “More importantly, it’s important to Levitate and to the festival itself that it stays here at the Fairgrounds.”
