Are you a member of the religious sect that contends Donald Trump was sent by a merciful Creator in order to rescue the Earth?
If so, comedian Bill Maher has got your number.
And on Friday, the host was calling you out.
As reported by The Daily Wire, Bill asserted January 6th’s Capitol chaos was the result of conspiracy theorists…and Christianity.
Here’s how he began:
“As long as we’re going to go to the trouble of another impeachment trial, we might as well be honest about what it’s really about.”
Ready?
“The events of Jan. 6 were a faith-based initiative.”
For those of you unaware, it seems support for the nation’s 45th president is not only an America-First movement but one founded upon Jesus Christ.
From Bill:
“[T]rumpism is a Christian nationalist movement that believes Trump was literally sent from heaven to save them.”
To be fair, he did play a clip of Republican Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville asserting God had sent The Donald.
According to Maher, the notion of 2020 electoral funny business is a “mass delusion”:
“There’s a lot of talk now in liberal corners about how Republicans should tell their base who still believe the election was rigged that they need to grow up and move on, and stop asking the rest of us to respect their mass delusion. And of course it is a mass delusion, but the inconvenient truth here is that if you accord religious faith the kind of exalted respect we do here in America, you’ve already lost the argument that mass delusion is bad.”
He went on to compare the Bible to conspiratorial craziness:
“It’s fun to laugh at QAnon, with the baby-eating lizard people and the pedophile pizza parlors, but have you ever read the Book of [Revelation]? That’s the Bible. That’s your holy book, Christians.”
Not a big fan of faith, that Bill Maher.
“Magical religious thinking is a virus, and QAnon is just its current mutation.”
Do megachurches play QAnon videos?
Do you know what QAnon even is? (I don’t.)
Either way, Bill says Yes:
“That’s why megachurches play QAnon videos. It’s the same basic plot: Q is a prophet, Trump is the messiah, there’s an apocalyptic event looming, ‘the storm,’ there’s a titanic struggle of good versus evil, and if you want to win, just keep those checks coming in.”
To his way of thinking, per the Wire, religion is the reason “the Trump mob believes in him.”
It sounds as if Christianity’s served as a primer for things right-wing and insane:
“They’ve already made space in their heads for sh*t that doesn’t make sense. When you’re a QAnon fanatic, you’re also a fundamentalist Christian. They just go together, like macaroni and cheese or chardonnay and Valium.”
What about the stuff that’s left-wing and insane? He didn’t say.
However — as covered by RedState’s Brandon Morse — Maher previously warned those on the Left not to “confuse 5,000 people with 74 million.”
“Yes,” he asserted in January, “even supporting the insurrection in spirit is, well, deplorable. But there’s a difference between holding illiberal beliefs and acting violently on them. At least that’s what they always told me about Islamic terrorism. … I preach, and still do, you can hate Trump, but not all the people who like him. And as counterintuitive as it may seem, you can like something run by [jerks] without being one yourself.”
Back to Friday’s episode, Bill compared January 6 to “a revival meeting.”
Bill must’ve attended a whole lot of really memorable revivals.
