Blank walls around Burnie will be transformed into vibrant murals when the city’s inaugural Street Art Festival kicks off in January. The festival will centre on the creation of large artworks on the back wall of the old Xerox building next to the Burnie Library and the northern facing wall of the Wilmot Street overpass. Coasters will be able to watch artists Damian Rossiter and Paul Eggins paint or head to the King Street car park to browse market stalls, visit food vans and listen to live music from performers including the J Arthur Band. Burnie councillor Amina Keygan championed the idea and said the aim was to “really encourage council and the community to get involved in livening up our city”. RELATED: “We often hear comments from those in the community that they really want to see more pride taken in the city, they want beautification of the city and so this is one step in helping to achieve that,” she said. “We’ll be looking to create a real sense of community connectedness so people can move between the artworks as they’re being created and really be present in what’s happening in their city.” The Burnie Street Art Festival was inspired by the week-long Vibrance Festival in Hobart but Cr Keygan said that was “a much bigger, broader festival that what we’ll be doing here”. She said the 2020 festival would be a “pilot” that could be further developed and expanded every year. The festival will coincide with the arrival of around 1100 tourists aboard the Seven Seas Voyager Cruise Ship and activities and live music in the Burnie library. Rossiter said it was “about time” Burnie launched a street art festival. “We’ve got some pretty plain, boring walls around and with all the tourists that come and visit, it gives them something to get around and help them stay in Burnie,” he said. Rossiter already has a number of graffiti artworks around the city, including the Corporal Baird memorial at the Burnie RSL. His festival artwork will be created next to the library and depict a young child letting his imagination run wild as he reads. The Burnie Street Art Festival will be held January 11.
