Her Excellency, the Hon Dame Anette King receiving the Festival of International Understanding baton from Cowra Mayor, Cr Bill West.
At a small presentation held on Wednesday, December 11 at the New Zealand High Commission in Canberra, Mayor of Cowra, Councillor Bill West, Chair of the Festival Cr Ruth Fagan, General Manager Paul Devery, and Festival Coordinator Meredith Burton welcomed New Zealand as guest nation for Cowra’s Festival of International Understanding.
Meeting with Her Excellency, the New Zealand High Commissioner to Australia, the Hon Dame Annette King, Cr West presented Her Excellency with the Festival of International Understanding baton and discussed the history of the Festival and New Zealand’s connection to it.
“We are very honoured to be a part of the Festival for the third time in the 53 years of Cowra Festival history,” the High Commissioner said.
“We have a close relationship with Australia which we value so very much and we look forward to coming to Cowra to learn more about the town and celebrate our history and friendship,” the High Commissioner continued.
With planning for the festival well underway, the Cowra community and residents of New Zealand will all have the opportunity to get involved and be a part of the celebrations which will be held from Friday, April 3 to Sunday 5 April 5, 2020.
“The relationship between Australia and New Zealand goes back many years – partly because of our global proximity which found us depending on one another – but also because of our friendly competitiveness in sport and pavlova ownership,” Cr West said.
“Our Gallipoli and ANZAC history is a big part of both our countries lives, and we will certainly be incorporating that into the festival program,” Cr West concluded.
Information on how individuals, stallholders and Cowra schools can be a part of the 2020 Festival International of Understanding can be found on Council’s website or on the Festival of International Understanding Facebook page.
