Attorney General William Barr on Tuesday admitted that the Department of Justice has not discovered evidence of enough voter fraud to change the result of the 2020 presidential election. His comments come as President Donald Trump and his legal team are engaged in legal actions in key battleground states alleging that some type of fraud occurred, and it is the reason Biden won the race.
During an interview with The Associated Press, Barr stated that U.S. attorneys and the FBI are investigating “specific complaints and information” that they have received, but so far, they have not found the smoking gun.“To date, we have not seen fraud on a scale that could have affected a different outcome in the election,” he said.
In November, the attorney general gave a directive to U.S. attorneys nationwide, allowing them to look for “substantial allegations” of voting irregularities before the election was certified. His memo gave prosecutors the freedom to ignore the Justice Department’s standard policy that would normally disallow these types of actions.
President Trump’s campaign team has been publicly making allegations of a conspiracy by Democrats to switch or manufacture enough votes to ensure that former Vice President Joe Biden got enough votes to become the next president. The AP reported that “they have filed multiple lawsuits in battleground states alleging that partisan poll watchers didn’t have a clear enough view at polling sites in some locations and therefore something illegal must have happened.”
However, the judges handling these cases — many of which are Republicans — have struck down the president’s legal actions due to lack of evidence. Some of these judges were appointed by the president himself.
Barr also seemed to directly refute claims made by attorney Sidney Powell, who has made allegations of a conspiracy involving voting machines that supposedly switched millions of votes from Trump to Biden. Before filing her lawsuit in Georgia, the lawyer repeatedly hyped up the legal action, calling it “epic” and “biblical.”
The attorney general told the AP: “There’s been one assertion that would be systemic fraud and that would be the claim that machines were programmed essentially to skew the election results. And the DHS and DOJ have looked into that, and so far, we haven’t seen anything to substantiate that.”
He pointed out that most of the claims the DOJ has received are related to isolated incidents and not a systemic, widespread effort to rig the election. “Most claims of fraud are very particularized to a particular set of circumstances or actors or conduct. They are not systemic allegations and. And those have been run down; they are being run down,” he explained. “Some have been broad and potentially cover a few thousand votes. They have been followed up on.”
As the battle over the election has stretched into December, it appears that it might end soon. The president’s lawsuits have not gained any traction and it does not appear likely that Powell’s suits will go anywhere. Barring an earth-shattering revelation of evidence showing definitively that the election was stolen, it seems that this story is nearing its conclusion.
