news, local-news,

The program for this year’s North West Film Festival has been locked in and many talented filmmakers from across the region are preparing to make their way to Inverell. For Festival Director, Sandy McNaughton, the message is loud and clear. “You don’t have to be a filmmaker to come along and get something out of this event!” The spectacular program includes the Festival Awards which will take place on Friday evening at 7pm at the Inverell Town Hall. The Festival Bar will be operating from 6:15pm so that audience members can enjoy a drink prior to the event. The ridiculously talented Rob Carlton will host this glittering night showcasing the very best films in the region created by our remarkably talented filmmakers. The workshops will be truly inspiring. They are a wonderful way to get a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes. The sessions are very relaxed and informal and provide the opportunity to ask that question that you have always wanted to know about how it all works,” said Sandy. An exceptional variety of films will be screening on Saturday, the highlights of which include Jason van Genderen’s experiential documentary about crowd funding, Lost in the Crowd. Emu Runner tells the story of a young girl seeking comfort in her ancestral lands following the death of her mother, where a bond she forms with a wild emu rebuilds her spirit. Shot in Brewarrina, Emu Runner emphasises the importance of Country, community and storytelling. On release, Rachel Ward’s landmark film, Beautiful Kate, was hailed as “easily one of the best films of the year, and quite possibly one of the most important Australian films ever made.” Starring Bryan Brown, Ben Mendelsohn and Rachel Griffiths, Beautiful Kate tells the story of a family in rural Australia torn apart by the truth. The film is rated MA15+. Hear Rachel talk about the making of the film when she will be in conversation with Rob Carlton prior to the screening. The North West Film Festival provides our communities, and all those affected by the drought across our region, with an opportunity to lift their spirits, believe in themselves. It gives us a reason to celebrate what can be achieved by people who believe in their rural community and its future, in the face of the greatest adversity. With free entry to all of the events, don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity at the Inverell Town Hall this weekend.
