WEIRTON — Planning is under way for this year’s Festival of Nations, under the guidance of the Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center.
In its 12th year, the festival is set to be held 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 21 at the Millsop Community Center. There is no charge to attend the festival.
The festival was inspired by a similar event created by E.T. Weir in the 1940s to celebrate the numerous cultures which made up the Weirton community as immigrants arrived in the Ohio Valley to work in the local steel mills and other factories.
Today’s event attracts groups from across the Tri-State Area, who come to Weirton to perform for local residents and preserve their traditions.
Throughout the event, attendees will hear a variety of musical performances, watch traditional cultural dances and even purchase food from a variety of nations around the world.
Informational tables also will be on display, showcasing stories and mementos from different nationalities and ethnicities.
Originally organized under the direction of Dr. J.K. Luthra, the festival committee now is chaired by Kalpana Gupta.
The Weirton Area Museum and Cultural Center is located at 3149 Main St., and is open each day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
