MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – Music lovers filled Marquette Saturday for the second ever Winter Roots Festival.
The day featured workshops, lessons, and concerts across the city, but one of the marquee events was the Marquette Folk Showcase. The showcase was held at the Forest Roberts Theater, with local bands and singers, and even some from around the country performing. Organizers hope events like this can help introduce a new audience to folk music.
“Sometimes people think of folk music like it has to be the same way every time and actually it’s the opposite,” said Dan Truckey, director of the Beaumier Heritage Center at NMU. “It’s always changing and each generation plays the same songs differently or they even add new songs.”
After the showcase a concert was held at the Ore Dock Brewing Company to close the festival.
