SHERMAN, Tex. (KXII) February is Black History Month. This year the city of Sherman kicked off its first Black History Month Festival.

The Bowie Scholarship Foundation has put on events all month long. Founder Barbara Bowie says it was made possible by Humanities Texas. They awarded the Foundation a $5,000 grant to bring the Mississippi Freedom Riders to share their stories with the Sherman community.

To honor the Freedom Riders Wednesday night, Nate Evans and the Temptations Revue put on a special performance for the community. Nate Evans is an original member of the Temptations. He says they continue to perform to carry on the Temptation legacy.

“I’ve been singing all my life, you know. And most of the guys in the Temptations besides Otis Williams are gone now, you know. And we just keep trying to make the star rise,” said Evans.

The Bowie Foundation plans to choose scholarship winners from Sherman ISD later this year with funds raised from the festival.

Thursday night at 7:00, the festival will wrap up at Grayson College with a civil rights empowerment summit by the Freedom Riders.
