The Cleveland International Film Festival once again will host full weekends of screenings in lively arts districts on both sides of town.
And in one case, the weekend screenings at satellite locations will represent a homecoming for the festival.
CIFF on Monday, Feb. 3, announced that it will host CIFF West in the Gordon Square Arts District and CIFF East in the Cedar Lee District on the first and second weekends, respectively, of the upcoming festival. Those screenings augment the more than 600 screenings of feature films and shorts at Tower City Cinemas, the home base of CIFF44, which runs March 25 through April 5. CIFF’s East Side and West Side weekends are supported financially by PNC Bank.
CIFF West will be on the first weekend of CIFF44, with screenings on the evening of Friday, March 27, followed by two full days of programming on Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29. Screenings will take place at Near West Theatre and the Capitol Theatre, two centerpieces of Gordon Square. The Capitol, like Tower City, is part of the Cleveland Cinemas chain.
Both Near West and the Capitol hosted CIFF West screenings last year, which was the first year of the CIFF West and CIFF East hub format for the festival.
CIFF East will take place the second weekend of the festival, starting on the evening of Friday, April 3, followed by two full days of programming on Saturday, April 4, and Sunday, April 5. Screenings will take place at the Cedar Lee Theatre in Cleveland Heights. The Cedar Lee, which also is part of Cleveland Cinemas, was the home of CIFF for the festival’s first 14 years. Last year’s CIFF East screenings took place in University Circle.
Marcie Goodman, executive director of CIFF, said in a statment, “We are proud and excited to establish residencies in two premier arts districts. Complementing our presence in downtown Cleveland with these additional locations will result in a very robust CIFF44.”
CIFF44 program details will be posted at clevelandfilm.org on Friday, Feb. 28, and printed program guides will be available starting Monday, March 2. Tickets will go on sale to CIFF members on Friday, March 6, and to the general public on Friday, March 13.
