NORTH PROVIDENCE – With a rejuvenated and more vibrant Centredale now coming to fruition, town leaders say they’re ready to take the next step in making it a destination for diners and recreation seekers.

Town Councilor Steven DiLorenzo is proposing a festival in the area of Smith Street between the Centredale roundabout and Centredale Revival Co., where the start of Mineral Spring Avenue is, to be held sometime next summer.

As DiLorenzo sees it, this event would be over a weekend and include local businesses in the area as well as food trucks and entertainment, a “smaller version of what you see at Federal Hill.” He said he thinks such an event would be a great thing to boost businesses a bit as well as a way to “promote our town a little bit.”

DiLorenzo received support from colleagues in forming a committee to look into such an event, including cost and logistics, and Carol Lombardi, wife of Mayor Charlie Lombardi, immediately volunteered to be part of it.

The event would also need state approval, as Smith Street is a state road.

Imagine, said DiLorenzo, hundreds of people sitting and eating good food while listening to the sounds of Steve Anthony, Ron Giorgio or Steve Palumbo.

Mayor Lombardi said he loves DiLorenzo’s idea, saying, “whatever we can do to bring people to the area.” He said the state’s expected approval of a change to allow drivers to take a left toward the end of Mineral Spring Avenue toward the Centredale roundabout would make it easier to hold such events, giving a quick shortcut.

Other exciting happenings in Centredale include the pending renovation of the old Brayton School into new apartments as well as streetscape upgrades to the roundabout, said Lombardi. The town recently closed on the $96,000 sale of the old school.

The whole area of Centredale is seeing sweeping positive changes, said Lombardi, and anything that can bring more attention to that while helping out business owners will be beneficial.
