Festival Pass for Thursday, Sept. 5

Years before we worked together I knew the name: Watchara Phomicinda. It was always attached to these colorful, stunning photos from Lightning in a Bottle or the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, photos that exploded with life and made you feel like you were in the center of the Do Lab even if you were in an air-conditioned office an hour away.

So who was this mystical Watchara? It turns out we would become festival ride-or-dies when our newsrooms became one and I got to work with this rare talent who brings us all into his energetic orbit. (We have at least one project each year we dream up together, whether it is having festival goers document their best Coachella memories or celebrating couples who fell in love there.)

But all of the work we have done together pales in comparison to the stunning collection of images he captured at Burning Man this year. When I went through the photo gallery, there was so much beauty that I think it brought more calm to me than any mindfulness app.

Elsewhere in the world of festivals, Tropicalia is coming back but there’s a big change, and catch up with the day that was Pasadena Daydream.

On the move

The Tropicalia Music and Taco Festival will return in November, but it won’t be in Long Beach. This year you can see stars such as Kali Uchis, Los Tigres Del Norte, Cuco, Chicano Batman and Caifanes in Pico Rivera. And that’s just scratching the surface of who’s on the bill. See the lineup and find out how to get tickets.

The Cure both curated and headlined Pasadena Daydream last weekend and while it was a very hot day, the music was something special.
